Vermont reported 62 positive tests for the virus on Wednesday. Two new positive tests were reported in Windham County. New Hampshire reported six new deaths, and 374 new cases statewide. Cheshire County reported one new death, and 22 new cases. Massachusetts reported 82 new deaths and 1,920 new cases statewide. Franklin County reported 11 new cases.
The third installment of Brattleboro’s 2020 Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes will be due on Tuesday. Payments made after February 16, will have an additional 1% interest added to the unpaid balance. The Town of Brattleboro utility bills are also due on February 16. Payments made after Tuesday will have an additional 1% interest, as well as an 8% penalty, added to the unpaid balance. Payments can be mailed to the Town of Brattleboro, 230 Main Street, Suite 111, Brattleboro VT 05301. Payments can also be made by dropping an envelope containing your check (no cash) into a locked “mailbox” in the parking lot behind the Municipal Center. An official postmark of February 16, 2021 will be considered on time
The State of Vermont will provide a suite of identity protection services to all unemployment insurance claimants who will receive a 2020 1099-G from the Vermont Department of Labor. This service is being provided in response to the inadvertent disclosure that occurred on January 29 when VDOL mailed incorrect 1099-G forms to some unemployment claimants. While not all unemployment insurance claimants were impacted by the unintentional disclosure, Governor Scott is committed to protecting their information and will offer these services to the more than 100,000 2020 unemployment beneficiaries, out of an abundance of caution. The protection will last for a minimum of 12 months from the date of the January 29th incident.
Governor Phil Scott has appointed Aryka Radke to be the next Deputy Commissioner of the Family Services Division of the Department for Children and Families within the Agency of Human Services. Radke will lead the Department’s child welfare and youth justice work. Radke began her role in Family Services on February 8. Christine Johnson, current Deputy Commissioner, will be working with Radke over the next four weeks to ensure a smooth transition.
New Hampshire Fish and Game Department officials urge outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution when enjoying winter activities on or near the ice. Parents are also urged to educate themselves about ice safety and share this knowledge with their children to help prevent accidents. There should be a minimum of 6 inches of hard ice before individual foot travel and 8–10 inches of hard ice for snow machine or Off-Highway Recreational Vehicle travel.
The region’s snowmobile industry is booming despite travel restrictions in place due to the pandemic. There have been many silver linings to the COVID-19 pandemic and that includes Vermont’s snowmobile industry, which is enjoying a winter wonderland across the state. “The business has been awesome,” said Mike Lynds with Snowmobile Vermont, which offers tours in four locations around the state. According to VAST, the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers, the total annual economic impact of the sport is roughly $550,000. VAST currently has about 22,000 members, which has remained steady this year.
Vermont’s U.S. attorney will resign this month at the request of the President Joe Biden’s administration, which will appoint new top federal prosecutors. On Tuesday, the acting U.S. attorney general requested the resignation of Trump-appointed and U.S. Senate-confirmed U.S. attorneys, including Vermont’s Christina Nolan. Her office announced Tuesday that Nolan will resign on or before Feb. 28. “It has been the honor and privilege of a lifetime to serve in the role of U.S. Attorney for Vermont, to serve the state I love, the office I love and the mission I love — seeking justice,” Nolan said in a written statement.
