A Brattleboro man has been ordered to immediately cease and desist holding himself out as an investment professional. Vermont Financial Regulation Commissioner Michael Pieciak says a call to the department’s consumer hotline complained that William Therieau was representing himself as an investment advisor and had encouraged a consumer to invest money with his company. The department’s investigation determined that Therieau had misled the consumer through a consulting agreement that contained false and misleading statements. Further, neither Therieau nor his purported company were registered in Vermont or any other jurisdiction to provide investment advice or services. Last, the department found no evidence that Therieau had invested the consumer’s funds as directed.

Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy continues to criticize the Supreme Court nomination and confirmation process for Judge Amy Barrett. Leahy says  the unseemly and hypocritical push to ram a Supreme Court nominee through with just days before an election in which millions already have voted is not only an affront to the American people, but it damages the Senate and our courts.  Republicans have cleared the Senate’s decks – not to work on much-needed COVID relief, but to spend two of the last weeks before the election on this mad rush to swing the balance of the Supreme Court for decades. Questioning of Barrett wrapped up Wednesday.

Vermont Governor Phil Scott and governors from four Northeast states are calling for reforms needed to achieve their states’ respective goals for clean, affordable, and reliable electricity. Scott says the work to address climate change can and must also work to make energy more affordable for Vermonters. According to Governor Scott, “With a strategic, multi-state approach we can have a greater impact on both climate change mitigation and energy affordability.”
