WTSA News For Your Thursday, February 6th:

Vermont’s Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders, plus New Hampshire’s Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan voted in favor of finding President Trump guilty in his impeachment trial. A Republican majority voted in favor of acquittal on two items brought by the U S House. Leahy said the finding was   the tragic result of the Senate failing its constitutional duty to hold a real trial.

Vermont democrats have failed to override the governor’s veto of a paid family leave plan – by just one vote. The Legislation passed the Senate last month by a vote of 20-9, surpassing the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto. But while the bill passed in the House, it didn’t happen with a two-thirds majority, sending lawmakers in search of more support. In a vote Wednesday, Democrats fell short by one vote on a count of 99-51.

A pair of two-time Harris Hill Ski Jump winners are set to compete for a trophy-retiring third victory at New England’s only Olympic-size venue Feb. 15-16. Marlboro College graduate Chris Lamb, winner in 2010 and 2013, and Blaz Pavlic of Slovenia, winner in 2017 and 2019, will be among the 26 male and nine female athletes from North America and Europe slated to leap off a 90-meter hill that’s one of just six of its size in the country.

Attorney General Donovan called upon the Legislature and the Governor to pass a bill that would provide free hunting and fishing licenses to citizens of Vermont’s State-recognized Native American Indian Tribes. The bill will add citizens of Vermont’s State-recognized Native American Indian Tribes to the list of people eligible for a free permanent license from Vermont’s Fish and Wildlife Department.  Passage of the bill may result in a modest decrease in revenue from licenses, but it will also promote an influx of new sportspeople to Vermont’s hunting and fishing communities and will help Vermont partner with native peoples to promote environmental and conservation initiatives.

Many Vermont bears are not getting much rest this winter.  Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s bear biologist Forrest Hammond is urging people to avoid disturbing them or providing any kind of food for them.   Hammond says bears can smell a food source from long distances.  And, if a bear starts to show up in your neighborhood, please bring in your bird feeders.
