The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services says concentrations of fine particle air pollution will reach levels that are unhealthy for sensitive individuals in populated valley areas in southwestern New Hampshire through Saturday.  State officials advise young people, the elderly or those with breathing problems to take precautions to protect their health by limiting prolonged exposure and exertion, especially outdoors. The  event is the combined result of low temperatures, calm winds and pollution transported from surrounding areas. Moderate air quality is predicted  for Vermont mountain valley locations on Thursday

 

Vermont’s Agency of Agriculture has a strategy to stimulate more rural economic development and bring Vermont products to people throughout Vermont and beyond. Ellen Kahler from the Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund says farmers have adapted to market changes and opportunities for 150 years but may need some additional assistance over the next decade. Last year, the Legislature and Governor Scott established a new law, which calls for the Ag Agency and its partners to research and develop recommendations to stabilize and revitalize Vermont’s agricultural industry.

 

The Vermont House and Senate Appropriations Committees are seeking public input on the Governor’s Recommended FY 2021 State Budget and will hold community-based public hearings on Monday, February 10, at nine locations across the state.   Anyone interested in testifying should come to one of the hearings.

 

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced the Respect Graduate Student Workers Act . The bill, if passed would prohibit the National Labor Relations Board from enacting a proposed rule which would strip graduate student workers’ right to unionize. If the change takes place, Sanders claims the rights of the more than 1.5 million graduate students enrolled in the country’s private universities would be threatened.

 

The NH Department of Health and Human Services has issued a request for information about whether to establish a psychiatric residential treatment facility at the youth treatment center at the Sununu Youth Services Center .  Governor Chris Sununu wants to  ensure that for the first time in New Hampshire, youths suffering from addiction, a mental illness, or both will be able to get the right level of care they need, when they need it and in the safest environment possible. Submissions are due by February 24 , and more information can be found at .dhhs.nh.gov
