The Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Windham and Bennington Counties. The pest kills 99 percent of the ash trees it infests. Communities in the region are encouraged to prepare for the impacts of the pest. Windham Regional Commission, in coordination with the Vermont Urban & Community Forestry Program will hold a Preparedness & Management Workshop on January 29, from 4:30 to 6:30pm at the Newbrook Fire station Community Room 

 

Brattleboro dog and wolf-hybrid licenses are available for the 2020 licensing period.  Vermont dogs and wolf-hybrids 6 months of age and older must be licensed on or before April 1. Renewal licenses may be obtained in person at the Town Clerk’s office, through the mail or online at brattleboro dot org. Dogs being licensed in Brattleboro for the first time may be licensed in person or through the mail by printing the license form. Vaccination against rabies is required by Vermont Statutes before licensing.  

 

A report on year-round and seasonal housing needs for Dover and Wilmington. identified a startling demand. The report called for an additional 60 and 140 one-bedroom rental units, between 70 and 180 two-bedroom rental units, and between 10 and 40 three bedroom rental units. The Sustainable Energy Outreach Network, Inc. developed a carpentry training program that not only includes basic carpentry skills but an introduction to high performance building strategies that has been endorsed by the Vermont Home Builders and Remodelers and the Vermont Passive House Association. SEON’s next program begins February 6th at the Windham Regional Career Center. Registration deadline is January 24th.

 

Hinsdale’s food shelf serves a wide variety of residents. Welfare director Darlene Leonard says money raised by project Feed the thousands is used to provide vouchers residents can use to buy fresh produce, meats milk and bread. Project Feed is short of this year’s cash goal. You can make a cash donation at river valley credit union, or online at Feed the thousands dot org.

 

More than 6,000 people registered to bet on sports in New Hampshire in the first day since the launch, according to the state lottery. New Hampshire became the second New England state to offer sports betting on Monday, with Republican Gov. Chris Sununu placing the first bet on the New England Patriots to win the Super Bowl. The state now offers sports betting online and on mobile devices. The New Hampshire Lottery reported Tuesday night that there were more than 6,000 registered players and more than $250,000 wagered so far. The lottery said it’s seeing a significant number of Massachusetts residents registering and playing in New Hampshire.

 The Bruins lose in overtime against Columbus last night, 2-1. The B’s host Edmonton Saturday afternoon, puck drops at 1. The Celtics host Atlanta tonight, tip-off is at 7pm. The Patriots host the Tennessee Titans tomorrow night in the first round of the wild card play-offs, kick off set for 8:15.
