Brattleboro police say suspected heroin, cash, and two handguns were seized during an overnight search warrant at an area hotel. The investigation is ongoing and arrests are expected. Police say they witnessed more than five visitors to a hotel room every hour, each lasting 3 minutes. They ask if you see something out of the ordinary to call 257 7950.

 

Vermont’s Agency of Education will be partnering with MetaMetrics to roll out the Lexile and Quantile Frameworks for reading and math cost-free to all Vermont school districts. Lexile and Quantile measures help educators personalize resources and instruction to support student growth in reading and math by matching student ability with text or math concepts of corresponding complexity.  Education secretary Dan French says educators will also have free access to an online platform that offers instructional and planning resources, including a book search, text analyzer, word lists, math skills database, teacher assistant and more. Nearly half of Vermont’s third and fourth graders are currently scoring below proficient on the Smarter Balanced Assessment.  

 

Plans are underway for Brattleboro’s 39th annual free Christmas breakfast. family members of founder Charlie Slate will be serving at the Brattleboro American Legion from 8 to 11 a.m. on Christmas morning. A team of about 60 volunteers come together to volunteer their time and expertise into preparing, serving and delivering the free breakfast. Last year, they served a record high 902 free meals, including 320 meals to our local fire, police, rescue, hospital personnel, to all our elderly facilities and anyone who called-in requesting a home delivery

 

Work continues next week at the Interstate 91 Williams river Bridge replacement in Rockingham. Crews will be continuing with girder erection, with girder prep work at a weigh station just north of the southbound bridge.  Work also continues on the southbound approach. there will be rolling roadblocks between 8 AM and 4 P M Monday through Friday.

 

New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen is calling for Senate action on a house passed bill that would reduce the cost of prescription drugs. The bill would allow Medicare to negotiate lower prices for prescriptions, including for insulin, just as the VA does, and would establish a new cap on seniors’ out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs. The legislation would also guarantee that taxpayer dollars are not used to subsidize drug advertisements.

Joel Embiid responded to criticism from Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley with a season-high 38 points, adding 13 rebounds on Thursday night to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 115-109 victory over the Boston Celtics. Boston doesn’t play again until next Wednesday when they visit Dallas.

 

Steven Stamkos had two goals to extend his recent tear and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the suddenly slumping Boston Bruins 3-2 on Thursday night. Boston is at Florida Saturday night.

 

Lamar Jackson threw five touchdown passes, scurried into the NFL record book and guided the Baltimore Ravens to their second straight AFC North title and 10th consecutive victory, 42-21 over the New York Jets on Thursday night.

 Locally, in Boys High School Basketball, Brattleboro visits Wahconah, and Hinsdale is at Wilton. In Girls High School Hockey, Brattleboro hosts their annual “Pink The Rink” game tomorrow.
