The item known as Proposition 5 now proceeds to the Vermont House, after winning support from 28 members of the 30 member senate. The constitutional amendment would need to pass both the Senate and House in two different Bienniums and then must be supported by a majority of Vermonters in the November 2022 General Election.

The Windham Regional Commission has received funding from the High Meadows Fund, for the launch of a project titled, “Windham Connectivity Collaborative: A scale-hopping approach to conservation planning in Southeastern Vermont.” Resource planner Emily Davis says a collaboration among the many local groups, is needed to drive larger and more impactful forest connectivity initiatives. The Windham Regional Commission will help facilitate engagement among the interested organizations and individuals into one grassroots-led regional strategy. The last of Vermont Air National Guard’s F-16 Fleet will depart the Burlington International Airport on Saturday. The ceremony will commemorate 33 years of flying the F-16 Fighting Falcon at the 158th Fighter Wing. The F-16 arrived in Vermont in spring of 1986, and has been called to support the nation in several instances including 122 consecutive days of combat air patrols over New York City after 9/11. In recognition of merit, the Vermont Air National Guard was selected to receive the F-35 Lightning II stealth aircraft and its arrival is slated for this fall. In preparation for the arrival of support equipment and aircraft, the current flying mission will be handled by other Air National Guard units who will continue flying the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

The Vermont House on Thursday approved a paid family and medical leave plan after hours of debate. The House voted 92-52 to advance it, but they failed to hit the 100-vote mark needed to override a veto. Coming up short of 100 votes could be significant because Gov. Phil Scott, R-Vermont, does not support the mandatory program the House passed. Here’s what the bill does: It provides paid family leave for new parents of up to 12 weeks and paid leave to care for yourself or a relative for up to eight weeks. Overall, the program will cost $76 million per year and millions more if taxpayers pick up the tab for state and school employees.

A judge has ordered the owner of a foreclosed ski club in Vermont to pay about $2.1 million to a club member who is unable to sell back 20 memberships he bought in 2015. The judge issued his ruling on two counts of breach of contract against Hermitage Club founder Jim Barnes and Hermitage Club LLC last month. Under the agreement, Robert Coffin, of Massachusetts, was to pay $65,000 per membership. The Hermitage would later buy them back at $75,000 each after 13 months, $85,000 each after two years or $95,000 each after three years.
